The SEMIS was established by the Education and Literacy Department in the year 1991. All public schools in the province are provided with a SEMIS code. The objectives of SEMIS are:
- To conduct annual institutional census for public schools and the collection of the educational statistics of the province.
- To provide and disseminate reliable and timely information to the researchers, planners, administrators, policy makers and donors for this use of planning.
- The Annual School Census (ASC) data is collected through structured questionnaires which provides information about public sector in three major areas.
